The setting
Midgaard is a walled city built around the Temple of Mota. Behind its white marble altar sits a ten-foot statue of Odin, King of the Gods, Midgaard's patron. The Greater God Redferne keeps a mansion on a cloud above the city. Roads run out from the gates: west into the forest of Haon Dor, north past the mines of Moria to the plains, and east along the Eastern Road to the ruins of Thalos, destroyed in a war, and the desert port of New Thalos that replaced it, with its Sultan and its Museum of the Greater Gods.
Beyond lie the lands of Anon. Centuries ago, in the Goblin Wars on the Plains of Blood, the warlock Baragar sold his craft to dark powers such as Krogthar from a keep near Mount Doom. Goblins are still seen outside Midgaard's south gate. On the north wall, the cathedral of The Shielding sends its knights through stained-glass gates into the worst places in the world: the UnderDark, the Marsh, Hell, Drow City and Mahn-Tor.
The world is old and patched together, with about 95 areas and nearly 7,000 rooms. Most of it is classic sword and sorcery, but a few corners are modern, licensed or plain silly; they are listed at the end.
